St. James Street in Brighton is the 1st road to be built in the late 18th century, outside of old Brighton, the area now known as the "old lanes". Indeed, before being called St. James, the street was simply called "the new lane". It seems that the street was a major shopping area from the word go. However, unlike today, it was a very poshy place in the 19th century, being dubbed Bond Street of Brighton.
